Winter School: Lone Twin

Performance and kindness

What is an act of kindness? How can performance engender kindness, how does contemporary performance - a practice often located at the extremes of experience - approach sociability, co-operation and collaboration? As performance makers, what does it mean to be well-meaning? To want to fit in, to not cause trouble, to not disturb or disrupt, to not oppose but to agree, to confirm, to help, to be kind?

A series of process-based activities during the course will be directed towards the making of small performance events intended for public spaces. The course is not just appropriate for those already undertaking investigations into performance and public space, but also for anyone wishing to approach new areas in their artistic practice.

Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters (who collaborate as Lone Twin) draw on the dynamics of contemporary theatre and performance, live art and dance disciplines in making work that deals specifically with ideas of textuality, physicality, place, travel and orientation. They are also performing during the National Review of Live Art - participants on the course should try and see this work if at all possible.
