Things On Fire

The Galapagos Man

Locked within endless cycles and systems, enslaved by a machine of objects, a helpless ministry inspector finds solace in the memory of his mother’s home cooked breakfast. Through puppetry and object manipulation, The Galapagos Man is a multi-sensory performance that presents an absurdist meditation on the future of human evolution through a cooked breakfast, a pair of disembodied legs, a finch named Darwin and a dog called Dog Dog.

Things On Fire are a theatre company formed at the University of Exeter in 2003 who have produced a diverse range of experimental theatre that is driven by a philosophy of the object.

The Galapagos Man is the company’s most recent intervention into the life of the object. Transforming the stage into a giant marionette they present chaos with stringent organisation, clinical precision, and sizzling bacon fat.

Previous productions include The Lightning Conductor (2005) produced by the Exeter Arts Council and Sanatorium Under the Sign Of the Hourglass (2005) a roaming site specific performance around Exwick Mill. Driven by a fascination with the life of the object, they continue to create theatrical experiences infused with a unique live cinematic language.

Made in conjunction with Wimbledon College of Art.
