[+] SAKIKO YAMAOKA  (JAPAN)
Handmill Vol. 9

‘I define my performance works as sculptures depicting action and time, the relationship between the artist and audience, and between the artist and materials. I attempt to create an example of the human condition, and I want to have people examine a variety of cultural questions. In particular I want to work within the framework of political, historical, and social contradictions of the Japanese consciousness.‘
Born in 1961 in Japan, Yamaoka graduated from Musashino Art University, and worked as a painter in Tokyo. In 1991 she started to make collaborative performances with friends at a large cemetery. Since 1997 she has worked in performance festivals in Europe (UK, Germany, Poland, etc.), and in Asia (Korea and Singapore etc.).
