Drawing form the rich literary tradition of Greek Mythology, Myths & Metamorphosis revisions these ancient stories, examining the corporeal and carnal nature of the tales. Referring primarily to Ovid’s Metamorphosis, Helena explores the text as a visual language and uses her body as subject to recast the myths. The works include Hera, whose breast milk formed the Milky Way, Scylla, with ferocious dogs in place of her lower limbs, and Europa who was ravished by a giant bull whilst gathering flowers in a meadow.
Myths & Metamorphosis was created in collaboration with sound artist Mark Wright and filmmaker Chiara Ambrosio with the technical assistance of Marty Langthorne.
Helena’s most recent work, Tracing Shadows, was developed with the support of Artsadmin Bursary Scheme, premièred at Chelsea Theatre London for the Sacred Season 06/07 and was presented at Chapter Arts Centre Cardiff, Royal Opera House London, and NRLA 2008.
Mark Wright has produced works for Futuresonic Festival, Art Radio 106.5fm., BAC, and Future Cinema Events. ‘A fairy tale world that combines the seductive and the destructive, the childlike and the adult, desire and the artificiality of desire…eerie, compelling, and haunting.’ Theron Schmidt, RealTime Arts.
