Institution Everyone

Over 3 days Institution Everyone will explore the status of thinking in contemporary society. Beginning with the proposition “equality of access to thinking” this live work will initiate a public process of talking, writing and making.

During Institution Everyone John Dummett will be undertaking different activities by himself and with members of the public. These will include informal and formal spoken works, the collaborative writing of critical texts and the carrying out of ceremonial tasks. All of these activities will take place in and around a temporary structure erected for Institution Everyone. This physical ‘refuge’ for thought and thinking will perform not only as a working space but also as a reliquary for critical thinking in the 21st century.

Since 2002 John Dummett has worked in the UK and abroad on socially and contextually engaged projects, which provided live critiques of the ‘public realm’. This critical process has been developed and made public through forms and props appropriated from acts of public celebration, protest and remembrance.

Recent works have explored what ‘the public realm’ means or refers to and how its meaning is made visible or legible in architecture, voice or action.
