Drawing Event Seven

In the English language the verb to draw is given multiple meanings, the majority of which are used to denote movement or composition. It is with these multiple meanings in mind that Matt Cook began a series of drawing events exploring the connection between sound, movement and image.

SOUND: The work looks at the traditions of music composition and improvisation. Pure marks of pencil on paper are amplified while being digitally converted to melodic sound samples, forging connections between electronic music and acoustic sound.

MOVEMENT: Fast and rhythmic, the movement in the work is bodily and has connections to dance. In reality it is the reversal of dance, the movement is the cause of sound not the reaction to sound.

IMAGE: The drawing action produces images. These images become the score for the music produced. The score is made at the same time as the music, giving graphic representation to improvisational music.

Since graduating in Timebased Practice in Cardiff in 2002 Matt Cook has presented collaborative work with Andre Stitt as well as presenting his drawing events in Cardiff, France and China. He has been commissioned as artist in residence at BCA gallery, Bedford to produce his first solo exhibition in 2005.
