Something In The Blood
The Worksop train line continues along the back of South Parade, along an expanse of field where, as kids, we amused ourselves for hours shoving giant dock-type leaves down the crack of our pants pretending to be squirrels. On day trips to Cleethorpes or Lincoln with Nan, Grandad waited our return at their rickety back garden gate without fail. Highlight of the trip - us to spot him at back gate - him to spot us in train carriage - wave, and wave, wave till out of sight. The happiest I ever witnessed Grandad was at this moment, or, tending part of his garden devoted to Chrysanthemums ...
Something in the Blood is an autobiographical comical yet poignant horticultural journey told through interviews, e-mails, and digital photographs. A tale of creativity, obsession, conservation, isolation, friendship, and survival.
Through a passion for all things green, Lisa finds herself in daily correspondence with like-minded plant fanatics from all over the world. They talk about things they are only comfortable telling someone they will never meet in the flesh. Stories of mental breakdown, slug slaughter, rescuing plants from the developer’s bulldozer, and just what it means to be an orchidophile.
