The Sign of the Times

There are many different organised groups in society, and it is human nature for people to seek membership and to feel they belong. This film installation is based around the importance of individuality within these organised groups and in society as a whole, expressing the importance of perceiving people as individuals before considering their group, religion, culture or background.

Participants are asked to perform a series of four of their habits/mannerisms in a formation similar to that of the Catholic ritual of The Sign of The Cross. It uses this Catholic ritual as a basis for recording people’s mannerisms and behaviours. People are filmed acting out their habits/mannerisms, sped up and slowed down to synchronise with the rest of the participants and added to this mass documentation of society. You can feature on the piece whilst it is here. Please come and help document the diversity of our society. The ever-changing film installation will be on display alongside the filming area and it will progress and grow as the day unfolds.

I create short films and film/sculptural installations based around the extraordinariness of the everyday, people’s manners and mannerisms, identity and culture. Since completing my degree in Interactive Arts in 2002, I have had two solo exhibitions in Manchester and have had work exhibited in various group shows. I work as a Residential Social worker and A Freelance Gallery Educator at Tate Liverpool, as well as working as a practising Artist.
