JIVA PARTHIPAN
Necessary Journey
‘This is a performance lecture about the privilege of travel. Here, the narrative of my inability to travel is juxtaposed with theories about the politics of travel.
Recently I was offered a ‘Necessary Journey’ scholarship by the British Film Institute and Arts Council England to travel to Mexico and the USA. But my American visa was turned down and a series of other incidents made it impossible for me to undertake my journey. Therefore I embarked on making a performance lecture involving photographs and documents leading up to my necessary journey which never materialised. I use spoken text, live performance, arrest warrants, and letters from MPs.’
Jiva Parthipan is an interdisciplinary artist working with a particular interest in power. His work is concerned with the manner in which power is negotiated in the interpersonal, social, geopolitical, and sexual spheres. Depending on subject and context he utilises a variety of disciplines and strategies ranging from games, dance, video, text, and interventions to realise his ideas. He has an MA in Performance (Distinction) from Goldsmiths College, London.
Past work includes FIST!, Necessary Journeys, Al Qaeda State Ballet, [man(DOG, MONKEY, GOD)], Waiting, and Pakiboy.
