Harminder Singh Judge (UK)

Live Sermon

Live Sermon is a short and intimate performance that re-contextualises the language of Eastern Religions. A speaker, which is installed inside the artist’s mouth, plays a meditative sound piece whilst the body acts as its passive housing. Ritualistically painted and dressed, and standing in a large purpose built aluminum tray containing 5mm of milk, Judge’s performance becomes a struggle to swallow and breathe.

‘Harminder Singh Judge is a performance artist working with the language, ritual and semiotics of the Hindu and Sikh religions. The transference of the sacred into a secular and aesthetic context as performance makes for a visually powerful and sexually charged encounter.’ Manick Govinda

In 2005 Harminder was accepted onto the Platinum scheme with Fierce! Earth and developed Chonkary Maro, a live interactive performance which utilised sound and food. Parallel to this he began work with Vivid, a new media arts centre, through their ISP programme. During this research period Harminder developed the ‘Sermonic Series.’

Based in Birmingham, he has shown work at Tate Modern and The Bonington Gallery, is currently mentored by Franko B, and is planning a collaboration with Manuel Vason. He is also a 2007 Artsadmin Bursary Award recipient, and is supported by an A.C.E Grants for the Arts Award.
