FRANCESCA STEELE
Pulse
Pulse is a further development of Francesca Steele’s desire to scrutinize presence. Her previous one-to-one performances have explored a distantly observed presence that existed through the reflected gaze. Pulse deliberately closes this gap, and becomes a work not only of sight but also of touch.
The work reflects the artist’s fascination with the present body and with what cannot be articulated through words. The work encourages the viewer to reflect on their own feelings by offering an opportunity to delve into experience. By creating a ‘portal’ with her own body, Steele distracts the viewer from their usual perceptions, thus replacing constructed understanding with the emotional and biological facts of being and presence.
‘My intention is to puncture holes in our realities. To examine that which we don’t speak about, or can’t articulate. To venture where language fails.’
