Performance and installation as pure time-based media have found a marginalized position in the American art scene ever since their earliest foundations. This positioning has evolved quite intentionally, specifically through the use of these media as a tool to offer an alternative audience experience to the typical gallery or theatre setting.
As the idea of public space changes, so does the approach of such artists interested in utilizing said locale as their preferred exhibition venue. Participants will discuss such ideas, the changes in the public sphere and the role of the artist to communicate ideas in this ever shifting and un-controllable environment.
