Art
and Political Action on the Mexico/USA Border
In
her recent book The Lure of the Local Lucy Lippard writes, "The
potential for an activist art practice that raises consciousness about
land, history, culture and place and is a catalyst for social or political
change cannot be underestimated, even though this promise has yet to be
fulfilled." Lippard is right not to claim too much for activist art.
However, at the point of the 'local' the engagement of people in
collaborative art practices changes the perception of individuals in ways
that can transform their lives. It is happening now in the shantytown of
Moclovio Rojas, Tijuanna.
