NEW MOVES was founded in 1988 as an annual nine-week season of international choreography. Nikki Milican was at the time Programme Director for the Third Eye Centre (now the Centre for Contemporary Arts). The festival grew in stature and was renamed NEW MOVES ACROSS EUROPE in 1991 to reflect Glasgow's role as European City of Culture and the festival's growing local and international stature. The Festival celebrated its tenth year with "a decade of dance" and in 1998 renamed the festival NEW MOVES (new territories) to reflect new developments in choreography, dance and interdisciplinary practice.  The Festival has presented a large number of premieres and commissions throughout its history.
