Gareth Kennedy  |  Passive Consumption mk.3.

"this piece farcically addresses Coca-Cola's trans-national and "universal" presence and appeal"

Drawing on the popular and ubiquitous brand logo of a consumer culture, and associated consumer fetishes, this piece farcically addresses Coca-Cola's trans-national and "universal" presence and appeal. Consumption of the "product" throughout the meditative, methodical process of making a dyed rice mandala undermines the performer/consumer's focus and concentration as Coke's high sugar and caffeine content leads to over-stimulation, hyperactivity and ultimately, degeneration. This evolution is to be made explicit to the audience, who are free to come and go and witness various degrees of this degeneration.

Gareth is a final year student of the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. Currently working towards graduation in June 2003.
