Commissioned by New Moves International 'In considering the iconography and legends of Lives of the Saints, I am reminded at many points of another tradition, that of performance art. Each achieves a legacy predicted on (often dubious) witness accounts and anecdotal documentation. One can glean in the image/caption constructs by which the works of Beuys, Abramovic, Acconti et al are posthumously disseminated, a sense of artists themselves stepping forward to replace the art object just as the Saints initially insisted on replacing idol-worship with exceptional acts. Both however, have themselves become iconic traditions as the subjects of cultural histories and belief systems.' Aaron Williamson explores some of the acts of certain Saints as performances, connecting and collapsing them with classic images of performance art. |
