“Men dressed in wigs and
dresses à la Marilyn Munroe…the piece becomes a tragicomic record of
contemporary idolatry, of our fascination for pop culture icons, a fascination
that seems to be steering towards obsession.
Clinic. Exit
is a vision of a world dominated by consumerism and manipulation.”

What
rules the world: Money or Fear? The intoxication brought on by unification in
the 80’s has suited both the policy makers and visionaries of a new, global
moral order. The theatre of Akademia Ruchu poses a moment of doubt in a system
of truisms and inevitabilities, not everything is a sure thing.
On
stage a “game” is created in which the players recognise that to outdo
others one must correct and improve one’s personality and they name desired
human aspirations that could assist them in becoming successful competitors in
the face of future challenges. They bring order to the world by fabricating
new ideals, this world, in the form of a whirring horizontal wing, seduces the
senses and seems to overpower moments of human ingenuity.
Since
its beginnings back in 1973 Akademia Ruchu, Poland’s most audacious theatre
makers, has been working at the very edges of artistic disciplines, producing
a politicised and visual “theatre of behaviour”.
In all their creations, whether it is work for the streets, gallery
spaces, industrial sites or a black box theatre, they possess the desire to
surpass the triviality of life and the banality of theatre.
In spite of, or perhaps because of what has happened in their own
country over the past decade, they hold dear to the principle that artistic
radicalism and a social message are not mutually exclusive.
In
1998 the Company celebrated a sell out success at the NRLA with Song,
an astonishingly profound piece of theatre that reflected on human identity
after the great revolution. Their new show is an exciting visual spectacle,
marking a new departure for the Company and their much-anticipated return to
Glasgow.
